Sissel Stangenes is a recognized Norwegian visual artist and printmaker who works across a wide range of media. She studied at the Norwegian State College of Arts, Crafts and Design, the Western Norway Academy of Fine Arts with a specialization in printmaking, and as an exchange student at Academie Minerva in Groningen, the Netherlands. She has worked as a professional artist since the early 1990s, and this retrospective exhibition presents works from throughout her artistic career. [romsdalsmuseet.no]
Since her debut exhibition at the Molde Art Association in 1993, she has worked mainly with printmaking, both traditional and experimental techniques, painting, drawing, and photography, often on a large scale. Today she is based in Hustadvika in Møre og Romsdal, where she runs her own studio and exhibition space in the former school building at Hustad, known as Galleri H.A.V. [romsdalsmuseet.no]
Stangenes describes her artistic practice as follows:
“Throughout history, people have built their cultures upon a shared identity: being human. That is what I work with, the experience of being human. I have an investigative and experimental approach to art and often cross boundaries in innovative directions. Developing an independent artistic expression is a slow process. Everything revolves around ideas, philosophy, and experiential knowledge, searching for forms of expression as the work develops.
Art creates new spaces and is an important arena for communication and human understanding. I work in various techniques within painting and printmaking, but also with larger 2D and 3D art projects. These projects are philosophical and conceptual, where the idea can be more important than the artwork itself.
Social issues and interpersonal relationships are recurring themes in my projects, and several of them are aimed at children and young people.”
Her works have been acquired by major public institutions, including the Norwegian Arts Council, the North Norwegian Art Museum, the University of Tromsø, and Nordland County Council. She has also completed several public art commissions throughout Norway.
This exhibition at Krona presents her artistic production across the decades. A long and distinguished career has resulted in an exceptionally broad artistic expression. One example is the project“bokSTAVforming”, an installation for children of all ages that invites play and imagination around language and the symbols we live with and interpret within our own contexts.
We are delighted to present such a versatile artist.
The exhibition is also a sales exhibition. Admission is free.
